The Veil of Prosperity

“When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Luke 18:22

Living for today

Living behind a veil of prosperity is believing you should live long and be prosperous. You want to live out your days on earth with purpose but living for prosperity or for material possessions should cause some concern. Jesus spoke to the disciples and the multitudes about dying to self, taking up a cross and following him. When the rich man asked Jesus what he should do to be saved, Jesus told him to sell all he had and give it to the poor.

The rich man could not do what Jesus asked.”

He greatly valued riches and giving them up was too much a sacrifice. Jesus looks at every person and asks them to surrender whatever is held in great esteem. God wants to remove the veil of prosperity.

See stuff as the necessity of life and not life itself. Below are a few verses to stir your thinking. Are you holding too tightly to ordinary things? Is God trying to unveil you to trust him more for provision? Behind this veil, can a person honestly comprehend the following Scripture verses?

  • “And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Matt 10:38-39
  • “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?” Luke 9:23-25
  • “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Gal 2:20
  • “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Phil 1:21

The unveiling

Prayerfully, consider the goal to which you are working? Are you veiled to the misled belief that you can have it all in this life and the next?
