In Need of an Advocate

While driving through a busy intersection in Khartoum, Sudan, my family and I were involved in a car accident. No one was hurt. Resolving the issue, however, was another matter.

Waiting for an advocate

After spending hours at the police station, the officers determined the other vehicle had right of way. I was considered guilty of causing the collision. They required me to wait in jail for a Sudanese citizen to come and advocate my case. As a foreigner, they wanted to insure I would remain in the country and pay the repairs.

Hospitality is an important part of the Sudanese culture, so I was allowed to sit at the counter instead of behind bars. I appreciated the kind gesture and waited for my advocate.

Jesus our advocate

John states you have an advocate in the person of Jesus Christ,

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1

Without Jesus you stand condemned before the holy God, unable to give a righteous plea and gain freedom from your sins. Jesus acts as an Advocate and intercedes for you. He alone has the ability to free you from sin’s bondage and its consequences.

Your only hope is in Christ, the One seated at the right hand of the Judge of the whole earth, making intercession for you.

Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.” Romans 8:34

A late release

Around 11 PM, my advocate arrived at the police station and made arrangements for my release. I was thrilled not being required to stay overnight.

Jesus has come that you may be free from the darkness of sin.

The challenge

Thank God for sending His Son Jesus to serve as your advocate. Live a life worthy of the price He paid on your behalf.
